Did you know that physical activity is important when recovering from illness, reducing stress, and avoiding chronic health issues? The activity I’m talking about is not earth-shattering or muscle fatiguing like running a marathon or doing a triathlon…it’s brisk walking. The walking should be ‘walking with a purpose’ or ‘active walking’, not strolling or lollygagging. Brisk walking or light hiking releases endorphins, those naturally occurring chemicals released in the brain that reduce pain and relaxes you. Added benefits of brisk walking boost your mood while improving your strength, toning your muscles, and preventing some long-term health issues.
Last weekend, my husband and I went to Arabia Mountain National Heritage Park and Panola State Park just east of Atlanta, and this is what I saw…a feast for the eyes and solace for the soul.
I feel a bit of history about Arabia Mountain would be helpful as well as interesting. Arabia Mountain is considered a monadnack, an isolated rock hill, knob, ridge, or small mountain that rises suddenly from a gently sloping or level surrounding land. In Metro Atlanta, there are 3 monadnacks…the famous Stone Mountain, Arabia Mountain, and Panola Mountain.
Like Stone Mountain, Arabia Mountain was quarried for decades before it was turned over to Dekalb County park system. The stone quarried from Arabia Mountain was granite and called “Tidal Grey” because of its density, strength and swirl pattern. This granite has been used in constructing buildings for the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, the Brooklyn Bridge, Atlanta, and other Georgia cities.
